Huntsman Presidential Chairs

Six of 12 new presidential faculty chairs at the University of Utah were named Tuesday, June 19, with the remaining six to be named next year. Announced in October by the U and the Huntsman Family Foundation, the Jon M. Huntsman Presidential Chairs are named for the late businessman, philanthropist and founder of the Huntsman Cancer Institute.

“The Huntsman family’s commitment to the University of Utah is profound, and these chairs are yet another testament to their dedication to advancing health research, education and compassionate care,” said U President Ruth V. Watkins.

“They are particularly notable for the breadth of fields and subjects they support,” she continued. “In addition to the honor they confer, faculty across our health campus will have significant additional resources to pursue new research, extend care and educate the next generation of health care providers. This is a powerful addition to the Huntsmans’ legacy and marks a new chapter in our continued relationship with the family. On behalf of the faculty and the entire university community, we are incredibly grateful for these generous awards. Theirs is a gift not just to faculty, but to patients, their families and caregivers, as well as our community, region and nation.”

The faculty members selected have demonstrated excellence in research, clinical care and career progression in health sciences. They reflect diverse academic disciplines, with appointments in dentistry, psychiatry, population health sciences, biomedical informatics, pulmonary medicine and obstetrics gynecology.

“These individuals are recognized leaders in their respective fields,” said A. Lorris Betz, interim executive dean of the U School of Medicine, senior vice president for health sciences and CEO of University of Utah Health. “Their exemplary research and clinical work has already evidenced considerable impact, and with this additional support, they will continue to advance our collective knowledge and improve care in their respective fields.”

When the U and the Huntsman Family Foundation extended their historic partnership to advance research and clinical care this past fall, the framework largely centered on cementing the future of the Huntsman Cancer Institute, founded by Jon and Karen Huntsman, with a mission to eradicate cancer. In addition, the Huntsmans also outlined support to the University of Utah Health Sciences to address other medical needs and specified the creation of 12 presidential chairs to support faculty.

“Our family’s existing and steadfast commitment to cancer is well known, and with that commitment is a vision to advance a broad array of health and medical research and clinical work at the University of Utah,” said Karen H. Huntsman, chairwoman of the Huntsman Family Foundation.

The appointments begin July 1, 2018, and will end June 30, 2023, with the possibility of a one-time additional five-year renewal option. Six additional faculty will be appointed to the remaining chairs by July 1, 2019.

“Individually, each faculty member is a recognized leader in their respective field,” said Peter R. Huntsman, CEO of the Huntsman Family Foundation. “Collectively, they advance our shared knowledge for the betterment of all. Our family understands that to tackle the most pressing issues facing health today requires the type of integrated and expansive approach that the University of Utah Health Sciences has pioneered and is a recognized national leader.”
